Rhythm & Blues is just a title.  The title was invented by a music journalist named Jerry Wexler in 1948 to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban Blacks.  And, as music progressed, the title was applied to blues, soul, funk and a whole host of other styles.  But, it is just a title.
